Do you have a special event coming up?

A birthday, graduation, bridal shower, or baby shower?

A DIY popcorn bar is a fun, customizable treat that works for almost any celebration.

For my daughter’s 16th birthday we hosted a surprise party at home with music, dancing, a DIY photobooth, friends, laughter—and of course snacks.

Because what’s a party without snacks? Since Emma’s favorite snack is popcorn, a popcorn bar felt like the perfect centerpiece for her sweet 16.

How to Create the Ultimate Popcorn Bar

We styled Emma’s party in gold and white for a simple, elegant look. I pushed the kitchen table against the wall to create a serving station and temporarily raised the hanging light with an S-hook so it wouldn’t be in guests’ way—safety first.

I removed the usual artwork and displayed a birthday photo collage above the bar to personalize the space.

I used signs to guide guests and reinforce the theme. One sign read:

Life Can Be Salty. But 16 Is Sweet

A second sign gave simple instructions: Grab a bag. Scoop some popcorn. Top with your favorites. Enjoy. These small touches make the setup feel intentional and festive.

I printed the signs on white cardstock, backed them with gold glitter cardstock, fastened them with gold brads, and added a sheer gold ribbon for a polished look.

What Ingredients Are Needed to Create a Popcorn Bar

The most important ingredient is, of course, the popcorn. You can pop fresh batches on site, use a popper like a Whirley Pop, or purchase pre-popped popcorn if you need large quantities quickly. For our party we bought fresh movie-theater style popcorn from a local theater—perfectly buttery and familiar.

Offer a variety of seasonings so guests can customize their bowls. Transfer bright seasoning containers into uniform glass spice jars with chalkboard labels for a cohesive display. Matching containers make the table look curated and tidy.

Use small buckets or bowls to hold toppings and provide spoons for serving. Toppings that are always popular include M&M’s, Skittles, chocolate chips, gummy bears, and peanuts—choose a mix of sweet and salty options so everyone can build a mix they love.

Decide on containers for guests to use—paper bags, small bowls, or treat boxes work well. I used gold-and-white treat boxes for single servings; they look festive and are easy for guests to carry around.

Emma’s friends enjoyed making personalized popcorn boxes throughout the night—an easy activity that doubles as a snack station and a conversation starter. A popcorn bar works for kids’ parties, teen events, showers, movie nights, and casual gatherings.

Below is a compact list of supplies to assemble a complete popcorn bar:

  • Popcorn (freshly popped or pre-popped)
  • Seasonings and flavored powders
  • Small jars or shakers for seasonings
  • Variety of toppings (candies, nuts, chocolate)
  • Serving scoops and spoons
  • Serving containers (bags, boxes, bowls)
  • Signs and labels to guide guests
  • Decorative accents to match your theme
