Meater Plus Review: Honest Pros, Cons, and Performance Guide

The Meater line of wireless meat thermometers ranks among the most innovative cooking thermometers we’ve tested. With a sleek design, premium packaging, and truly wireless operation, the Meater Plus rethinks how thermometers should look and perform. Paired with a well-designed smartphone app and features like Meater Link and Meater Cloud, it makes monitoring a cook from anywhere simple and convenient. Below we summarize our hands-on testing and evaluation.

What we liked:

  • Intuitive smartphone app that is easy to navigate
  • Fully wireless operation with no tethered cables
  • Strong battery life that lasts through long cooks
  • Dual sensors: one for internal meat temperature and one for ambient chamber temperature

What needs improvement:

  • Maximum internal temperature reading is limited to 212°F
  • Initial charge time can be lengthy
  • Bluetooth range is about 165 ft, which is good but not unlimited

Look and Feel

Unboxing the Meater Plus makes it obvious this is not a typical meat probe. Presentation is minimalist: a modest outer box that hides a small bamboo storage and charging case inside. The case is compact—about the size of a small remote—and stores the probe vertically in a metal clip that also functions as the charging contact.

Charging Base

To the left of the probe in the bamboo case is a power/connection button and a single LED indicator. The back houses the battery compartment for a single AAA battery used to power the repeater charger. The battery lid is easy to remove and held in place with a magnetic backing rather than screws, which keeps the design clean.

The charging base includes two magnets so you can attach it to magnetic surfaces in the kitchen, like a refrigerator. Avoid mounting the wooden case directly inside a smoker or oven, since high heat can damage the wood.

Probe Design

The probe measures 133 mm (just under 5.25 inches) and has a tapered profile reminiscent of a golf tee. The upper portion is slightly wider to house the ambient temperature sensor, enabling simultaneous measurement of internal meat temperature and cooking chamber temperature.

At 6 mm in diameter the probe is thicker than many instant-read models, but that extra thickness accommodates the electronics required for wireless operation. Compared to other fully wireless probes, Meater Plus still presents a reasonably slim profile.

Using the Meater Plus Wireless Meat Thermometer

We test thermometers in real cooking situations to judge usability and reliability. For this review we used the Meater Plus while smoking a picanha (also known as culotte or sirloin cap), aiming to treat the cut like a mini brisket to evaluate the probe’s performance during long, fatty cooks.

Smoking Meat with the Meater Plus

We prepared the picanha with a mustard binder and a classic salt-and-pepper rub, then placed it in a barrel smoker once it reached temperature. After the meat was in the chamber, we focused on setting up the thermometer and connecting to the app to begin monitoring.

Setting up the Meater Plus

Before first use the Meater Plus requires an initial charge of about six hours. Remove the small plastic tab from the battery compartment and let the repeater base charge the probe. When the LED on the charging base turns green the probe is ready.

Connecting to the Meater App

The Meater app, available for iOS and Android, pairs over Bluetooth. With phone Bluetooth enabled, remove the probe from the base and press the button on the charging case. The app detects nearby Meater devices and guides you through pairing and setup.

Using the Meater App to Monitor Internal Meat Temperature

Once paired, insert the probe into the meat to the safety notch so the tip remains protected from excessive heat. The app displays both internal and ambient temperatures and offers presets, temperature alarms, and a guided-cook system that estimates remaining cook time using an algorithm based on current progress.

The app’s interface is clean and easy to read, making it simple to monitor progress from a phone. The dual-sensor feedback and guided cook features make timing meals and coordinating with other dishes much easier.

Bluetooth / Wi‑Fi Range

The listed Bluetooth range for the Meater Plus is about 165 ft, and our tests matched that specification under clear line-of-sight conditions. We received reliable readings from most of the backyard and could even get updates from inside the house on upper floors.

To extend monitoring further, enable the Meater Link feature in the app to connect the repeater base to your local Wi‑Fi network. This allows a second device running the Meater app to monitor the cook remotely. With Meater Cloud, you can check progress from virtually anywhere by leaving the probe paired to a smart device connected to the internet.

Is the Meater Plus right for you?

The Meater Plus marks a meaningful advance in wireless thermometer design, but it isn’t the perfect fit for every cook. If you want a single, fully wireless probe with both internal and ambient temperature sensing and clean, app-driven monitoring, the Meater Plus is an excellent choice. It simplifies long cooks and delivers consistent results without dealing with wires.

However, if you need to monitor multiple proteins simultaneously or require internal temperature readings above 212°F, this single-probe solution may not meet your needs. The repeater allows linking multiple probes to the same base, but adding multiple units can become costly.

Overall, the Meater Plus is a compelling option for grillers and smokers who value wireless convenience, a polished app experience, and reliable battery life. It brings a fresh approach to temperature monitoring, with room for improvement in top-end temperature range and initial charging time, but it remains a strong choice for many home cooks and pitmasters.
