There’s something special about a local festival that brings neighbors together—especially one that combines live music, great food, local art, and plenty of space for kids to play. This fall we spent an entire day at the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival, and by the end of it I understood why so many people return year after year.
We enjoyed the day so much that we were already planning to come back next year before we left.

Easy Arrival, Laid-Back Vibes
We began our morning by parking in the BART lot and taking the free shuttle straight to the festival entrance. It was convenient and frequent, so we didn’t wait long. The streets were already lively when we arrived, and because we started early we decided to have breakfast at Tutu’s Café Bar & Market with the kids before diving into the festivities.
Sitting outside gave us a perfect view of the street parade and a passing band. The French toast and pancakes were delicious and provided the energy we needed for a full day of exploring.
Wine, Art, and So Much Food
The Lafayette Art & Wine Festival is one of the largest events in Contra Costa County, and it felt that way. More than 200 booths showcased local artwork, handmade goods, and crafts, while 30+ food vendors offered everything from food-truck favorites to restaurant-quality dishes. A strong presence from local businesses and shops added to the festival’s small-town charm.
Wine and beer were major draws. After picking up our festival wine cups and drink tickets, we strolled the festival with a glass in hand, sampling many local wines. There were plenty of beer choices too, including microbrews for those who prefer them.
Fun for the Kids, Too
As a parent, what impressed me most was how kid-friendly the festival was. Four separate Kid Zones were spread across the event, each offering rides and activities suited to different ages.
Our children loved the Pirates Revenge Ship Ride, the Jurassic Playspace, and the craft activities in the all-ages downtown play space behind Uncle Yu’s. That shaded area provided giant Jenga, ping pong, jewelry-making stations, and kinetic sand—perfect for a restful break from walking and sunshine.
We also caught a few live performances, including a lively show by a local dance group, which added energy and variety to the day.

Music played throughout the day on multiple stages, keeping the atmosphere upbeat and festive.

Ending on a Sweet Note
After hours of walking, tasting, and playing, we finished our day with a stop at a local ice cream shop just off the main street. The kids were delighted, and it was the perfect way to cool down before heading home.
Why We’ll Be Back
The Lafayette Art & Wine Festival delivered everything we hoped for: free admission, easy access, activities for all ages, and a warm community atmosphere. It manages to feel large and festive while remaining personal and welcoming—exactly the kind of event that becomes a family tradition.
We’ll definitely return next fall—perhaps with more friends or family—but regardless, it’s now part of our seasonal plans.
